The Impact Of AAA In Your Towing Company

The AAA or American Automobile Association is a well renowned federation of motor clubs that started in Chicago, Illinois on March 2, 1902. It has grown larger over the years involving many states and counties. It has provided outstanding service to the community in terms of road and traffic safety. One of the areas that the AAA is into is the roadside assistance to which they open a contract with a local towing company. This is a huge opportunity for the business to add more value to the company’s image and increase its potential clients.

At present, the AAA has a total of 55.6 million members in the United States and Canada. It has international affiliates in some parts of Europe such as The Netherlands. The members are entitled to the same benefits that they receive from their own country when they travel to the affiliate country and vice versa. So, the towing company AAA contractor can benefit from this wide scope of membership.
If you want to be a contractor for AAA, you need to prepare your towing company for the requirements and the business inspection.  AAA has a strict standard that you need to adhere to.  You need to provide the following documents upon submission of your application.
  • Business permit
  • Liability insurance
  • Tow truck drivers’ permits. The driver needs to choose from any of the licenses below.
*An incident Management License - towing with law enforcement accidents
*A Private Property License- towing for illegally parked or abandoned vehicles
*A Consent Tow License-vehicle owners that give the consent to tow and car dealers.
  • Tow trucks’ permit
Apart from reviewing the documents and your resume, the AAA representative will give a thorough check of your towing company; the staff, equipment, trucks. This is to ensure quality customer service to the vehicle owners.

The AAA has its good and not so good feedbacks from the towing contractors. As mentioned above, being a contractor of AAA is an avenue for more clients. However, not all towing companies are satisfied with the rates. According to these towing operators, the AAA is the lowest paying motor club in the country. The usual cost of towing is between $50 and $75. The prices vary according to the kind of service that was given. The AAA pays a base rate of less than $30. This is fine to some of the contractors because they are after the volume.  Let’s take this example: If you get 10 AAA towing calls at $25, that’s a total of $250 compared to only 3 calls at $50 which is $150 or none at all. Some would take the risk of receiving an AAA call rather than having none for the day. This works well for them when the designated contractor in that area is busy servicing other vehicle owners especially at winter. That’s where the other towing contractor can benefit.   Probably, start-ups may work for the AAA, too. A big towing company will no longer take the risk since it already has a name in the industry and a lot of regular customers to attend to.

To join or not to join the AAA as a towing contractor is your call. Weigh the pros and cons first.
